The island was extended with a long breakwater on the north side to protect Makassar Harbor from the waves. from the city and is closest to the city. Kayangan Island is about 2km from town across from the harbor and is full of simple restaurants and guesthouses. This is also the perfect time to sail around the islands. The best time to travel to the islands is during the eastern monsoon, which lasts from May to September. The islands closest to Makassar, such as Lae- lae and Kayangan are within 15 minutes by speedboat and are popular weekend spots, others have fishing villages, while those further afield, like Kapuposang Island, immediately overlook the deep sea and are therefore ideal for diving and snorkeling. This group of islands is known as the Spermonde Archipelago, but locals only know them by their individual names. Opposite the city of Makassar lies a group of islands basking in the sun, 55 in all, some large while others are simply sandbars that disappear at high tide.
